Immensely talented and highly regarded super lightweight teenage sensation Jorge Paez Jr. is in the infancy of his professional boxing career. But the hard-hitting 19-year-old certainly possesses the ability to keep the Paez name illuminated in the sport’s spotlight for years to come.
And with a record of 16-1 with 10 knockouts, the Sycuan Ringside Promotions boxer is off to a roaring start.
His 16th and most recent win was Aug. 4 in Hidalgo, Texas, on the undercard of Israel Vazquez’s stunning technical knockout win over Rafael Marquez, when he took a unanimous decision over Jaime Orrantia.
His 15th win was June 29 in Mexicali, Mexico, when he knocked out Carlos Urreai in the second round. His 14th win was a first-round knockout of Eduardo Rosario May 12 in Nogales, Mexico. His 13th win was a unanimous decision over Jamie Alvarado Feb. 16, 2007, in Beverly Hills, Calif. His 12th win was Dec. 15, 2006, in Mexicali when he stopped Rafael Urias in the first round.
His 11th victory was on an HBO pay-per-view card Sept. 16 in Las Vegas when he decisioned Derrick Campos. His 10th win and his six-round debut was a unanimous decision over Armand Horn on another HBO pay-per-view card Aug. 19 in El Paso, Texas. His ninth victory was a unanimous decision over Travis Hartman on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins-Antonio Tarver HBO pay-per-view card June 10 in Atlantic City N.J. His eighth win was a unanimous decision over Lowell Brownfield on the undercard the Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga HBO pay-per-view card May 6 in Las Vegas. His seventh victory was a first-round knockout of Ricky Alexander April 8 in Globe, Ariz.
Paez Jr., from Mexicali, made his debut at Sycuan Resort and Casino in San Diego Dec. 23, 2005, winning by second-round knockout over Lee De Leon. Paez Jr. made his Sycuan Ringside Promotions debut Aug. 12, 2005, in Laredo, Texas, when he stopped Javier Segura in the second round. All three bout were nationally televised.
Paez’s lone loss came against Ramon Guevara Feb. 16, 2007, in Hollywood, Fla.
“I feel very fortunate that Sycuan thinks enough of me as a person and as a fighter to make me part of its team,” said Paez Jr.
“Not only is Jorge Jr. extremely talented, but he’s exciting and colorful as well,” said Glenn Quiroga, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions of San Diego. “Considering his age and his exceptional skill level, we believe he has one of the brightest futures in the sport of boxing. There’s no limit to what he can accomplish in the ring and the popularity he can achieve.”
“I hope I can be as great a champion as my father was and, perhaps, raise the Paez boxing name even higher than he did,” said Paez Jr. “I know ultimately I will be a world champion.”
Paez Jr., who is promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, has big shoes to fill as his father, Jorge Paez Sr., was one of the most outlandish and outrageous showmen to ever grace a ring. Nicknamed “El Maromero” for the acrobatic flips he learned as a child while performing in a Mexican circus, Paez Sr. entertained fight crowds for almost 20 years, not only during bouts with his in-ring antics but prior to fights as well with his unusual ring entrances and over-the-top attire. Those antics almost overshadowed the abilities of Paez Sr.; he was the International Boxing Federation lightweight championship during 1988 through 1990 and defended that title seven times.
Paez Jr. made his pro debut Feb. 4, 2005, with a first-round knockout of Sergio Lopez. He followed that with a first-round knockout of Arturo Ramirez March 18, a second-round knockout of Adrian Tellez April 29 and a second-round knockout of Rodrigo Rendon June 24. All four bouts were in Mexicali.
Paez Jr. was more than ready to turn pro. He began boxing at age six and had an amateur record of 77-3. As an amateur he also had a successful outing against the son of another former world champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., in an exhibition bout. Paez’s amateur career was and his pro career now is under the apt direction of veteran boxing figures Andy Ruiz and Francisco Arellano. |
